I am a huge fan of Post Apocalyptic movies and ‘Love and Monsters’ took it to another level. Well they did give it their best shot to explain giant flesh eating insects by stating that it was because of the nuclear waste that fell on earth as a residue of destroying a huge asteroid that was on the collision course.(Another reason for not using nukes)

Seven years after the Monsterpocalypse, Joel Dawson, along with the rest of humanity, has been living underground ever since giant insects took control of the land. After reconnecting over the radio with his high school girlfriend, Aimee, who is now 80 miles away at a coastal colony.

It’s funny how Joel begins as a sidekick to a whole team of sexually active, bad-ass apocalyptic fighters, and he because of his poor survival skills and good cooking skills happen to be the chef. Though his underground family adores him, Joel finds himself useless and wants to desperately help his pack. The more he talks to Aimee, the more he wishes to see her. His mad love for Aimee acts as a fuel and Joel decides to tackle the unknown danger of the outside world, and leave behind his underground family. Everyone warns him, knowing that he freezes whenever he has been face-to-face with the monsters that have previously tried to break into the colony. Their survival advice to Joel is a stern, “Don’t fight. Just run and hide.”

By sheer determination to be with someone he first said “I love you” to right before the apocalypse, Joel navigates his way through a new world, passing along cliff-sides that have been turned into cobwebs, and through suburbs that have been swallowed whole by the nature. While walking through a backyard, he’s attacked by a massive frog in a swimming pool, and is saved from its tongue by a quick-witted dog named ‘Boy’. Boy becomes the best sidekick for our hero. They bond well as they share a sense of loneliness. Later on, Joel meets two more charming souls, they share a good comic chemistry, with Joel still as the clumsy underdog. Joel learns necessary survival skills form them, one being that not all the insects are as evil as they look, some are benevolent and harmless and that it can be seen in their eyes. After this, Joel takes his own route to get to Aimee while the 2 head towards the Snow cladded peaks in the north. Thereafter we get to see few thrilling action scenes in the journey where Joel successfully kills two giant insects and finally arises as the hero!

He finally reaches to Aimee’s colony, just to find out that Aimee has moved on and does not feel same as Joel feels about her. Quite a heart breaker. Joel connects with his colony via radio just to understand that the colony is in danger. Joel being his clumsy self and someone with bad survival instincts, survived for 7 days on land in the Monsterpocalyptic world and has learnt many valuable life lessons. He decides to go back to save his colony. Meanwhile, Aimee’s colony is raided by pirates or food thieves as they term them in the movie and Joel saves her and the colony from the danger.

Joel before taking his journey back to his colony, tells Aimee all the things he has learnt about survival and tells her that life is too short to stay underground. He then returns to his colony and then broadcasts all the information that he has experienced from the 14 days he spend on the land and motivates the survivors to take upon a journey to snow cladded peaks in the north as the insects cannot survive the cold. Here the movie ends and Joel’s and rest of the humanities’ journey begins.!
